The ANC wants to force every South African household to be levied with what they call a “household levy” which will be used to fund the ailing state broadcaster SABC according to a report by Sunday Times (times live.co.za)
According to the report by Sunday Times, the proposal claims that the South African Government should introduce a special levy to be paid by every South African household disregarding how they consume content.
“Every household is assumed to have a television. It does not matter whether you watch it or not,” said NEC chair Nkenke Kekana.
The ANC’s national executive committee made a draft of this plan from a meeting that was held last week which is made as part of its resolutions.
The National Executive Committee Chair Kekana reiterated that the levy would not be a lot of money for each household but would be enough for the SABC to be kept afloat.
The Sunday Times report also stated that the levy would use a similar model to that used on indirect taxes like the electricity tariffs used by Eskom as well as the fuel levy used by the Road Accident Fund.
