Rain has launched a new unlimited 4G data package for mobile devices called, “unlimited 4G for phones” for R379 priced on a month-to-month contract. I don’t like contracts!!

The new 4G data package for mobile phones is more like a complement to the existing R250 19 hours unlimited off-peak package which has a slight mishap of R50 per GB between 1800hrs and 2300hrs.

The difference between the Off-peak package and the newly introduced 4G data package for mobile phones is centered around some limitations which are a huge deal-breaker for me.

  • The basic streaming resolution will only provide a streaming quality resolution of up to 360p.
  • The service will not allow you to use your smartphone as a mobile hotspot.
  • Rain 4G unlimited for phones can only be used on 4G phones.

While other Rain 4G services can be used in any device, the new 4G for phones can only be used in 4G supported mobile phones.

Rain and Slow Speeds

When Rain launched a few years ago, the self-named Unlimited Data network had some of the best speeds in South Africa — maybe because they were still new and wasn’t congested just yet.

Since then, Rain internet speeds have dwindled significantly for even the most expensive packages prompting daily complains from its users .

In the case of facial recognition technology, an algorithm trained with, let us say 10,000 random faces of one color results in bias. I recently came across a tweet that […]
